Your idea or concept is like a seed that will not grow unless it is planted, watered, and sees the sun. The point is that it will not grow itself. It takes work from the inventor, whether that's hiring a third party or doing the "leg-work" themselves. One of the biggest pitfalls is an inventor assuming that just because his idea is "brilliant", it will be a success and make money. Someone or something needs to bridge that gap to realize that potential.

One of the worst things people do is that they don't research their 'invention' thoroughly! Inventors need to make sure that there isn't something out there already like their invention. You should consider whether or not your invention will actually sell in the real world. And lastly, putting together and getting the patent documents done correctly.
